Back home from touring the uk in ‘Is This Planet Earth?’, The Reekie Collection will be on show in St Leonards as part of the Coastal Currents festival. In this collection of oil paintings I have explored our fascination with Nature’s curiosities – unfamiliar organic forms have been preserved and presented for us to gaze upon. Inspired by genuine Victorian specimens, the works have an air of authenticity and importance. However, on closer inspection, the creatures are imagined – just like the form and depth are in the picture itself.

I had a wonderful time in Hull last weekend. “Is this planet earth?” opened for it’s final stage of it’s two year tour. First shown in Ty Pawb Arts Centre Wrexham in April 2018, then Aberystwyth Arts Centre in July 2018. It now resides in the excellent Ferens Gallery Hull till the 28th of July 2019.
Visitors will encounter wondrous creatures and stunning landscapes filled with colours and sensations that are heightened and strange. Beautiful to behold and often sci-fi in feel, the exhibition will have darker undercurrents relating to our destruction of nature.
There are sculptures by Salvatore Arancio, Halina Dominska and Alfie Strong, paintings by Dan Hays and Katherine Reekie, a sound installation by Jason Singh, a live performance by Patrick Coyle and videos by Helen Sear and Seán Vicary. Thank you to our curator Angela Kingston and all involved putting on the three shows.
