An exhibition of surreal landscape paintings and drawings by local artist Katherine Reekie. This collection of recent and past works explores our fascination with the monumental. From standing stones to topiary, the world is covered in impressive examples of humanity’s ability to create art in the landscape. Katherine presents a series of imagined scenes that explore the strange and powerful effect that scale and environment have on our perception. Her intention is not to depict reality but to nudge people to question and consider it. A Coastal Currents event.

I’m proud to announce Is this planet earth? opens at Aberystwyth Arts Centre this week.
14 July -14 of September
Aberystwyth Arts Centre
Aberystwyth University

Ceredigion
Wales, SY23 3DE
Is This Planet Earth? features wild creatures, exotic plant-life and remote landscapes created by nine artists. Every colour and sensation is heightened and their sculptures, paintings, sound-art, performance art and videos are all a bit sci-fi.
What if life on earth has become just a memory? What if these artists’ re-creations of nature are now the only way of experiencing it? This exhibition is presented as an offering to aliens who visit us in the future. Instead of seeing nature in reality, this is what they encounter.ber
Our annual members’ shows give all our artist members the opportunity to exhibit one or two pieces of their work. Historically, a large variety of media, styles and approaches are demonstrated within these shows.
Our members range from renowned professional artists who have already developed a following, to artists at an earlier stage of their artistic journey. These exhibitions offer the former the opportunity to show a couple of pieces reflecting their current work without having to prepare an all-encompassing exhibition and it gives the latter the opportunity to introduce themselves.
SoCo Artists is a group of professional artists, based in East Sussex, presenting a challenging programme of exhibitions, public arts, events and talks in an eclectic range of venues, taking their work to a wide and varied audience.
Miscellany 3 is SoCo Artists’ third annual show to be held at the gallery. The exhibition is in effect a members show, renowned for bringing together the work of this highly talented group of artists, representing a wide range of style and media.
The exhibition will show the range of work currently being undertaken by selected artists and makers who use Surrealism, even if unconsciously, as a basis for their ideas and intentions. Few artists today would describe themselves as a Surrealist and yet may well acknowledge elements of Surrealism in their work.
All work will incorporate the essence of the unexpected with elements that have a thought provoking take on reality.
Curated by artist Jo Welsh the exhibition includes works by Brian Catling RA, Gus Cummins RA, Kathleen Fox, Jane Hoodless, Antony Penrose, Katherine Reekie, Jo Redpath, Tim Riddihough, Mick Rooney RA and Jacob Welsh.
